Before he voiced Heat Miser, George S. Irving got his start as the narrator of Underdog
Before he was Mr. Sun, he was Underdog's narrator!
George S. Irving played Heat Miser in The Year Without a Santa Claus and reprised the role 34 years later in A Miser Brothers Christmas, and before both movies his cartoon career began on The Underdog Show.
Coming from an extensive Broadway background, Irving appeared in the original 1943 cast of Oklahoma! before being drafted into service for World War II. Irving lent his deep voice to over 25 Broadway productions before stepping into the recording booth in the world of cartoons.
In 1964, Irving was selected to be the narrator of The Underdog Show, for which his deep voice was perfect. Irving narrated every episode but knew he could put his Broadway acting skills to use, so little by little, Irving began voicing additional characters. It started in the first episode, where Irving played one of Underdog's shoeshine customers, a bank president, and a policeman. Voicing these additional characters eventually led to regular roles including Tap Tap the Chisler, Captain Coward, Mooch, Running Board, and General Nuisance.
Shortly after Underdog ended, Irving was cast as the Heat Miser in The Year Without a Santa Claus, an iconic role he would be remembered for and reprise years later.
George S. Irving is the only voice actor to appear in all 124 episodes of The Underdog Show and was the last surviving member of the original cast before he passed away in 2016.
