Ten celebrities parodied on The Flintstones
The Flintstones had prehistoric versions of everything, even celebrities!
Do you recognize these celebrity parodies on The Flintstones? This famous prehistoric family sitcom was a time capsule for more than just fictionalized cavemen, but for the 1960s as a decade. The Golden Age of Hollywood was still going strong and celebrity obsession was at an all-time high. Often in the episodes, Wilma would shriek with excitement and fangirl over the celebrity guest, while Fred would roll his eyes...until he got offered a guest role.
Fans were ecstatic to see their favorite actors and musicians as cavemen. Some of the biggest stars added "rock" or "stone" to their name and performed prehistoric versions of themselves.
We rounded up some of the most memorable celebrity parody characters, which ones do you remember watching?
Ann-Margrock
Ann-Margrock, a famous Hollyrock star, after being mobbed by fans everywhere she goes, decides to go undercover in Bedrock while touring her show. She gets a flat tire in front of the Flintstones' house. That’s right! Ann-Margrock’s car has wheels, it’s not powered by feet like all the other Flintstones-universe cars. Fred and Wilma do not recognize her, so she has a lot of fun staying undercover with them as ''Annie''. She sings lullabies to Pebbles and helps Fred and Barney prepare to audition for Ann-Margrock’s show. After voicing this spoof of herself, Ann-Margret said that kids recognized her in public because she sang to Pebbles.
Ed Sullystone
Ed Sullivan has multiple Flintstones personas: Ed Sullystone, Ed Shellivan, and Ed Stonevan. While the other iterations are only mentioned or appear on the Flintstones' tv screen, Ed Sullystone features in one episode. In “Itty Bitty Fred”, after Fred accidentally shrinks himself, Fred and Barney pretend to be a ventriloquist act so they can get on the Ed Sullystone show. Ed Sullystone thinks they’re really, really great! They get cast and appear on the show, but right as they begin their act Fred returns to normal size and they get kicked off the show.
Gary Granite
Cary Grant’s spoof, Gary Granite, has made two appearances in The Flintstones. In ''The Monster from the Tar Pits'' Gary Granite’s new movie is filming in Bedrock, and they’re casting locals! After a hearty amount of fangirling, Wilma and Betty audition. While their spirited auditions flop, Fred is randomly selected to be Gary’s body double and play the monster. At the end of ''The Rock Quarry Story'' he shows up to the Flintstone house looking for Rock Quarry, Wilma and Betty tie him up so he won’t run away like Rock Quarry.
Rock Quarry
Rock Quarry parodies Rock Hudson in The Flintstones. Rock Quarry’s episode is similar to Ann-Margrock: he is overwhelmed by fans everywhere he goes, he goes undercover in Bedrock, and he ends up running into Fred Flintstone, who has no idea who Rock is. Rock, pretending to be "Gus", really enjoys hanging out with the Flintstones and living a normal life. When he finally tells Fred and Barney who he is, they don’t believe him! After he tries replicating his performances for them, they kick him out and he ends up back in Hollyrock. Rock is voiced by John Stephenson, who also voices Mr. Slate!
Jimmy O'Neillstone
One of the earliest celebrity guests on The Flintstones, Jimmy O'Neill plays himself as Jimmy O'Neillstone. His popular show Shindig! has also been renamed Shinrock! Jimmy mentions that tickets for the show are free, so Wilma and Betty convince Fred and Barney to pick up the tickets for them. While at the studio, Barney drops a bowling ball on Fred’s foot and Jimmy O’Neillstone thinks Fred’s pain-induced jumps are a hot new dance for the show. O'Neillstone names the dance "The Frantic" and, as in many of the celebrity episodes, the fame goes right to Fred's head. Trying to be hip, Fred wears a wig to the ''Shinrock'' party at the Bedrock-a-Go-Go and, blinded by the bangs of his wig, falls flat on his face, creating a new dance crazy which Jimmy O'Neillstone calls ''The Flintstone Flop''.
The Beau Brimmelstones
In the same episode as Jimmy O’Neillstone, we see The Beau Brimmelstones, a spoof of the popular 60s band The Beau Brimmels. The show used a real recording of the band to show The Beau Brimmelstones performing their popular song ''Laugh, Laugh''.
Hoagy Carmichael
Hoagy Carmichael is a rare celebrity character whose name isn’t changed into a prehistoric pun! In the episode, Fred and Barney are trying to become songwriters and they meet Hoagy Carmichael in the waiting room. Playing himself in the show, Hoagie offers to record their song ''Yabba Dabba Dabba Dabba Doo!'' He even plays it on a ''stoneway'' piano with Barney.
Alvin Brickrock
Good evening. The Flintstones have a suspicious new neighbor… Alvin Brickrock! As Fred gets to know his Alfred Hitchcock-inspired neighbor, he reads in the newspaper that there is a murder suspect in the area who fits Brickrock’s description. Fred and Barney break into his house to look for clues and take a trunk, convinced Brickrock’s wife’s body is in there, only for it to contain her body building equipment. Brickrock closes out the episode in Hitchcock-style, eerily acknowledging he has a man-eating fish which could eat his wife “if required''… maybe Fred was right?!
Stony Curtis
Stony Curtis is the star of a movie called Slave Boy and the studio holds a competition for a fan to win Stony Curtis as their ''slave boy'' for a day. Wilma wins but the studio calls Fred, who brings Stony home while Wilma has a mud mask on. Wilma pretends to be wealthy to impress Stony, even enlisting Betty to pretend to be their maid! Fred gives Wilma a hard time about this, so Stony offers to help Wilma. Stony offers Fred a role in the movie and the fame immediately goes to Fred’s head. Fred is humbled as Stony’s understudy where he gets punched in the face, smashed by boulders, and run over by triceratops. Tony Curtis voiced himself in this episode.
Liberocki
Last but not least, Liberace's spoof in The Flintstones is known as Liberocki. In “The Masquerade Party”, Liberocki makes a quick appearance as the pianist at the Water Buffalo Lodge meeting. While he has no lines in the episode, he leads the Lodge in “The Water Buffalo Song”.
